Recently, I had an amazing opportunity to cover the 2016 Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship for www.visitsaintpaul.com via Instagram takeover. My fellow posters were the current Red Bull Crashed Ice World Champion @cameronnaasz and local photographer @marcacoleman.
Armed only with a press pass and a camera, I was off!
The 2 day event, located in front of the Cathedral of Saint Paul, was comprised of professional athletes from around the globe. Players raced against each other to make it to the bottom in the fastest time, crashing and flying all the way down. The 1600 ft ice track dropped 12 stories from beginning to end with the players reaching crazy-fast speeds of 40mph! Skater in above picture is @kreisimake.
The time trials and initial first runs were held on Friday afternoon with the main event starting around 7 that evening. Having a front row view made for some incredible photo opportunities! At night, splinters of ice rushed past the crowd in a haze behind the skaters as they tried to make it to the finish line.
Saturday, at the Red Bull Crashed Ice Village street party, crowds of people gathered to see a stunt riding display put on by Afton Alps (@aftonalps) in the middle of West 7th Street in Downtown St. Paul, MN. Pictured below is Snowboarder @ajronning doing a backflip!
Skiers and snowboarders both took turns flying through the air from different ramps, rails and piles of snow, while dj’s blasted electronic music through the downtown streets. Did I mention it was 60 degrees in February?!
